The Agoracoma project
Coma is a state of transient loss of consciousness from which the patient may emerge after a variable period, sometimes passing through an intermediate stage of impaired consciousness. Even today, it remains extremely difficult to assess consciousness (diagnosis) and/or predict its return (prognosis).
Our project aims to gain a better understanding of:
- how various biological markers (cerebral, cardiac, behavioral, etc.) interact with one another and with the environment—in a naturalistic setting (using emotional or social stimuli, such as the presence of loved ones)—during the recovery of consciousness
- how the mental representations of consciousness held by those assessing it (healthcare professionals and loved ones) influence diagnosis and prognosis.
- create a new local multidisciplinary consortium focused on the recovery of consciousness—encompassing medicine, rehabilitation, neuroscience, psychopathology, cognitive-behavioral psychology, philosophy, anthropology, epistemology, and artificial intelligence—while leveraging an extensive local network of universities, hospitals, family associations, academic programs, and the arts;
- promote interdisciplinary approaches by integrating concepts and methodologies through multimodal data acquisition (behavior, brain activity, interviews, observations, clinical data, etc.) and multidimensional analysis (data fusion, deep learning, computer vision, cross-analysis of speech and observations, etc.);
- promote a transdisciplinary epistemological approach by developing a model of consciousness and a new methodology for transdisciplinarity;
- facilitate the flow of knowledge through a back-and-forth exchange between practice and theory, with the aim of improving care, diagnosis, and prognosis.
