Support for the development of transdisciplinary research projects

One of SHAPE-Med’s priorities is to develop innovative, collaborative and transdisciplinary research into health and wellbeing, by fostering convergence between the principles of 5P medicine and the One Health approach. With this in mind, each call for proposals (CFP) is preceded by a call for expressions of interest (CEI), designed as a preliminary stage without competitive bidding.

At the end of this phase, project leaders have the opportunity to present their work during workshops designed for discussion and feedback, during which the facilitation teams and participants work together to refine the proposals so that they better align with the guidelines and objectives of SHAPE-Med.

Completed projects can then be submitted under the calls for proposals, which support both seed projects — exploratory in nature, lasting between 12 and 24 months — and structural projects, led by mini-consortia over periods of 36 to 48 months.

Funding schemes

Unlike in previous years, there will be no distinction in 2025 between seed projects and structural projects. Funded projects may run for between 24 and 48 months.

This third call for proposals aims to fund collaborative projects and has a provisional budget of €4 million. The Transdisciplinary Institute for Health will fund research projects lasting between 24 and 48 months, covering one or more posts (Research Associate, Research Fellow, PhD student, postdoctoral researcher, etc.) and providing an average of €100,000 in total funding per project year (any budget exceeding €100,000 per year must be clearly justified).

These projects must deliver significant advances in terms of fundamental knowledge, the health and wellbeing of humans and animals, environmental health, healthcare pathways, public policy and/or innovation.

The 40 funded projects

The aim of the Call for Proposals is to fund collaborative and transdisciplinary research projects. When the project was launched, we introduced two types of Call for Proposals:

  • The Seed Funding Call for Proposals aims to support the launch of exploratory projects in order to facilitate their future development. The provisional budget for the Seed Funding Call for Proposals is €1.5 million. The Transdisciplinary Institute for Health plans to fund around ten seed projects.
  • The Structuring Call for Proposals aims to support the formation of mini-consortia comprising research teams from different yet complementary disciplinary fields, with a view to implementing original projects that align with the scientific objectives of the SHAPE-Med@Lyon project. The provisional budget for the Structuring Call for Proposals is €4 million, with the aim of funding around ten projects.
