The Optimeg project

As part of the OPTIMEG project, clinicians from the Urology Department at the Centre Hospitalier Lyon Sud, part of the Hospices Civils de Lyon, and biomechanics specialists from the Laboratoire de Biomécanique et Mécanique des Choc, UMR_T9406 at Gustave Eiffel University and Lyon 1 Université, have joined forces to develop new assessment tools and gain new clinical and biomechanical insights into the mechanisms involved in the use of an inflatable penile implant.

On the one hand, a clinical study will investigate the relationship between the ease of operation of penile implant pumps and the rigidity of the erections achieved, as well as patients’ sexual satisfaction. On the other hand, the mechanical behaviour of penile tissues that contribute to the rigidity of the implanted penis will be characterised experimentally ex vivo.

The results of this project will provide essential tools for improving the overall care of patients and for developing a new generation of penile implants.

Karine BRUYERE-GARNIER

Karine BRUYERE-GARNIER is a research director at the Laboratoire de Biomécanique et Mécanique des Chocs (LBMC UMR_T 9406, Eiffel University/UCBL). She specialises in characterising the mechanical behaviour of biological tissues in the human body, particularly fibrous connective membranes.

Nicolas MOREL-JOURNEL

Nicolas MOREL-JOURNEL is a urological surgeon and hospital consultant in the Urology Department at the Centre Hospitalier Lyon Sud, part of the Hospices Civils de Lyon. He specialises in urogenital reconstruction, particularly erectile dysfunction.
