PollARLAiM is an innovative research project investigating the impact of air pollution on the survival of patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML), a particularly aggressive form of blood cancer. While it is known that certain pollutants—such as nitrogen dioxide, fine particles, and benzene—increase the risk of developing specific cancers, their influence on the progression of leukemia remains unknown.
Our team will assemble a large regional cohort of patients treated at hospitals in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region in order to cross-reference their medical, biological, and genetic data with their level of exposure to air pollution. The goal is to understand whether the air we breathe can influence survival outcomes in cases of AML and affect the disease’s characteristics.
Ultimately, this project could explain some of the disparities in survival among patients and pave the way for new prevention and management strategies.
Thomas Coudon is a research engineer at the Centre Léon Bérard (Inserm Unit: Radiation – Défense, Santé, Environnement). A specialist in environmental exposure assessment, he develops and applies spatiotemporal modeling methodologies for chronic atmospheric exposures in epidemiological studies. He coordinates research projects investigating the links between various environmental exposures (air pollution, UV radiation, PFAS) and cancers or chronic diseases, utilizing geomatic and multidisciplinary approaches.
Amine Belhabri is a clinical hematologist at the Centre Léon Bérard and a specialist physician within the network of comprehensive cancer centers. His work focuses on the comprehensive care of patients with acute leukemia—particularly acute myeloid leukemia (AML)—and myelodysplastic syndromes. He is involved in numerous national and international clinical trials aimed at improving therapeutic strategies and advancing knowledge regarding acute leukemia. He also participates in basic research at the Centre de Recherche en Cancérologie de Lyon (CRCL) and is a member of the “BMP, Ecosystème, Cellules Souches et Dynamique du Cancer” team.
