Health and Territories
An innovative approach to establishing a link between health and the environmental and social characteristics of territories, and to predicting ripple effects.
This program is based on the premise that territorial inequalities—whether geographic, environmental, sociocultural, or socioeconomic—create landscapes characterized by disparities in exposure to chemical contaminants and biological agents, as well as in access to food, information, education, and healthcare, and that these factors influence well-being and the onset of disease. The goal is to understand how certain territories facilitate (or hinder) the maintenance of good health and, conversely, how health crises affect the functioning and quality of these territories. This systemic territorial approach will be central to the program, enabling all initiatives within SHAPE to describe and analyze the diverse social and environmental determinants of health.
The goal is to enable health and public health interventions to be implemented locally and tailored to the diversity of territories and health determinants. This program is expected to yield significant advances in understanding and predicting how land-use planning, ecosystem management, and social organizations—along with their dynamics—influence various aspects of health territories across a continuum of human-induced environmental change.
