Cancer prevention

Cancer is a vast and complex group of common diseases (400,000 cases in France, 4 million in the EU) whose nosological classification is rapidly evolving alongside molecular and immunological categorizations. Many cancers remain incurable despite the advent of precision medicine. Paradigm shifts are therefore required for most cancers, necessitating a more advanced understanding of the biological drivers of progression, refined prevention strategies, and a better grasp of exogenous risk factors. Many treatments now require comprehensive molecular and immunological analysis of cells, accounting for their spatial and temporal evolution. These are the challenges that citizens, patients, healthcare professionals, and researchers will need to address in the coming years. Connecting these components is the goal of the SHAPE-Med@Lyon oncology program.

Lyon is uniquely positioned to develop this program, hosting a vast array of cutting-edge expertise, scientific output, and oncology education programs—including over 1,300 high-impact annual publications (representing 15% of France’s total)—as well as the CRCL (France’s dedicated cancer research center), IARC/WHO, VetAgro Sup, and expert clinical research teams at the CLB and HCL. With leadership spanning basic, epidemiological, clinical, and human and social sciences, Lyon’s track record of excellence also encompasses the AURAGEN WGS sequencing platform, SIRIC LYRICAN, LabEx DEVweCAN, and the European Reference Networks (ERNs) EURACAN and Cancer Prevention Europe (CPE).
